The Deputy Secretary-General was briefed on the socio-economic and humanitarian context in Niger and the alarming downward trend on key socio-economic indicators including high proportion of poverty, low adult literacy, high fertility rate , persistent Gender Based Violence, food insecurity, Chronic malnutrition. She was also briefed on the deteriorating security situation, violent extremisms and recent serious floods which affected thousands of Nigeriens as well as the covid 19 pandemic. UNCT highlighted that key imperative for transformational change in Niger necessarily goes through a robust socio-economic recovery plan, a strong data and information management system and a strengthening of human capital through investment in Education, food and nutrition, peace and security. He also talked about UNCT’s support for Niger’s key priorities through UNDAF and other cooperation frameworks.
